Mother's Day and the Cats

I just celebrated Mother's Day and of course my cat Lucy was into the tissue paper. It is always nice to open gifts, but my cat Lucy gets aggressive with the tissue paper. She loves to attack it and shred it into bits. I am always stuck with the task of picking up all the shreds of paper that end up all over the house after someone opens a gift. so, this morning after Mother's Day, I picked up tiny bits of tissue paper all over my living room.

My other cat Nancy is suffering with cancer. she is 15 years old and now spends most of her time sleeping. My daughter named her after my mother who did not care for cats. My daughter thought if the cat shared her grandmother's name, she might change her mind about liking cats. I bought the cat as a gift, after I learned my father was dying of cancer. I thought that having a kitten to hold and care for would soften the blow when her beloved "Poppa" died. It is ironic that the cat should end up with the same terrible disease. It is also ironic that my business partner and I had just opened an online store for pet memorial products. (http://www.pawprinturns.com/) I never thought about the potential loss of one of my own pets so soon after opening the online store.

I never had pets growing up, as my mother was afraid of animals and I was a military brat who moved a lot. I would beg my mother for a pet and she would always tell me that I could have as many pets as I wanted when I grew up. Naturally, as soon as I grew up, I got a pet. My first was a beautiful Great Dane named Beau, I adopted from the NHSPCA. I have adopted a number of rescued pets over the years and the SPCA is a great organization. If you are thinking about getting a new pet, please consider one that is "previously owned".

Happy Mother's Day

I'm pretty sure cats think Mother's day is just another holiday for them. My cat definately 'knew' the ribbon was for her!
